Department of Social Science

The Department of Social Science is dedicated to preparing the students to become responsible citizens in the world of diverse cultures and opportunities. This Department is an integral part of B.Ed. and M.Ed. programmes. Teaching of social sciences helps students to analyse and evaluate information and make informed decisions. Developing research skills among its learners is also one of the concerned areas of this department.

Knowledge of social science helps students develop a sense of global citizenship and an understanding of their role in creating a more just and equitable world. The department also helps students understand the complexities of social issues.

Objectives

• To make the pupil teacher understand the aims of teaching of social science.
• To understand the importance of social and cultural practices for holistic development.
• To develop critical thinking among prospective teachers.
• To create a sense of respect for local heritage and traditional value system.

Activities Undertaken by the Department

• Besides teaching, the Department of Social Science works to promote culture and heritage under the banner of Heritage Club of GCOE.
• There is a provision for students of M.Ed. Programme to visit various cultural and natural heritage sites of Jammu Region.
• To explore the inner potential of the prospective teachers, Heritage Club offers various competitions like Poster Making, Wall Painting, Basohli Painting and workshops related to heritage themes.
• Every session, students of Heritage Club paint the walls in the college premises depicting regional festivals, heritage sites and overall cultural practices along with the magic of millets.
